MDD'S HISTORY

Two Brothers, One Second-Hand Drill, Endless Ground to Cover
In 1997, Matamata locals Jeff and Mark Stoner saw a chance to ride the wave of the new trenchless technologies increasingly being used to install utilities around the country. Having mastered some of the country’s first horizontal directional drills in the early ’90s, they took the plunge buying a Ditch Witch JT820 and began threading comms and fibre ducts around the Waikato and beyond.

there were a lot of lessons in those early days but the results spoke for themselve. As word spread, their client base grew to include councils and lines companies who started asking MDD to assist with installing water mains and power cables with the same trenchless precision. Over the next two decades, the fleet and staff kept pace with demand: more rigs, trucks, hydrovac units, all helping support the growth of power and water services across the North Island.

A new chapter: In 2021, after 25 years in the driver’s seat, the Stoners entrusted MDD to the Schick Group. The move paired drilling expertise and experience with Schick’s nationwide resources, systems and an uncompromising safety culture; ensuring founding principles of still guides every crew, every day.
